Ava and her pups saved by an angel with a big heart
If anyone ever doubts the need for charities such as ours then they need look no further than the story of our Ava.
Ava was found starving in the remote Eastern Turkey village of Nidge desperately trying to look after her six new puppies.
She lived in a village where dogs are commonly regarded as unclean and unwanted vermin.
Ava has felt unwanted and persecuted most of her life and this became worse after the arrival of her pups.
Fortunately not everyone in the village is so cruel and a lovely lady there by the name of Ozgul decided she could not just stand by.
She went to find Ava and her pups and she managed to get them to her house and hid them in her garden.
It wasn’t long though before villagers found out and they were far from happy.
The family came under pressure to get rid of the dogs and this is when Ozgul contacted Animal Friends of Turkey.
Ozgul had saved other dogs in that area with our help and was desperate for us to step in again as she feared the dogs would be killed if they were not removed.
And so even though this was 700 kilometres away from the region of Turkey in which we operate we set up a rescue operation.
We managed to get hold of Ava and initially four of the pups – we were unsure where the other two went.
A volunteer then heroically drove the five of them from Nidge to Fethiye. A few days later a fifth pup turned up and we have managed to get him across into our foster network as well.
We will try to find homes for all five of the pups but we are desperate to find the right home for sweet Mum Ava.
She is a very gentle dog and it is clear she just wants to belong. What is also clear is that she is only now beginning to understand that humans can be kind.
Her coat was a dull and dirty brown when she came to us but it has now turned into a wonderful deep golden colour now she is getting proper food.
She is now so much more confident and is responding amazingly well to having a home and some care and attention.
We believe she is just over two years old and even though she is fine with other dogs we think she would benefit from a quieter home.
What she needs more than anything is the patient, loving care and understanding she deserves.
So if you feel you could be that special person for Ava then please check out what’s involved in taking on one of our rescue dogs by clicking this link and reading our Dog Adoption Policy guidelines.
A home check is always made and while there is no adoption fee required, we do ask for a donation with all our dogs to help towards our costs.
