Young Cassie was rescued in the nick of time, saved from a life on the streets
Cassie was found by an English couple next to their apartment and it was immediately apparent she was struggling. She was filthy, starving and totally terrified. She appeared to be a young dog but had no tag in her ear so wasn’t a registered street dog and she was just bewildered. The couple knew they could not leave her without food or water or a safe, secure area so kindly took her in to help her.
Upon taking her to the vets it was found she was on heat and had probably been running and running away from the male street dogs which accounted for the state she was found in. Luckily she hadn’t been caught and wasn’t pregnant unlike so many other poor Turkish street dogs. Like many other dogs trying to survive on the streets, she also had a blood infection and was covered in fleas.
The couple named her Cassie and desperate to get this gentle young dog the help she deserved contacted AFOT. They looked after her and she got brighter and brighter each day. When her heat finished she was moved to the safety of our sanctuary where she thrived.
Cassie is absolutely gorgeous with beautiful big, soft brown eyes. She is now a large, typical Turkish shepherd type dog thought to be about 18 months old and weighs 35-38kg (April 2022).
She greets strangers with a waggy tail and has been calm when visiting the vets. She moved from the sanctuary to gain living in the home experience with one of our foster carers and is doing really well. She is extremely loving and likes to get up on the sofa with her foster mum for cuddles – when invited. She is also very good with visiting children.
She has a mind of her own but is learning and well behaved with commands. Her favourite thing to do is to walk, she just loves exercise and will walk for miles and miles. She can pull on the lead to begin with but will soon relax and walks well.
Although Cassie loves dogs in general, she can can be food aggressive around other dogs and this will need controlling if other dogs are in the home. Ongoing training is essential as she is still only a young dog and a large girl so consistent, kind but firm boundaries are a must as this is how she feels safe and secure.
