Harley is now and learning to be happy at last
Harley and his brother Pogo were left all alone and bewildered when their owner died in a small village near Akyaka in Turkey.
Their heartache became even worse when their mother and brother were killed by villagers who laid down poison traps for them.
They were left in the garden with no food or water not knowing what had happened or what to do.
They managed to get out but they never strayed far from the only place they knew as home.
However, with no food and no care their condition soon went rapidly downhill.
They developed skin conditions and became painfully thin and it was not long that were seen as a nuisance and as dirty vermin to villagers living nearby.
They were regularly shooed away or had stones thrown at them. Some villagers called the authorities to have them captured and taken to the shelter or taken to the mountains to be dumped.
The villagers continued to plague them and even set poison traps for them.
Luckily these two did not take the poisoned food but unfortunately their Mum and brother were not so fortunate.
Not surprisingly by now both had become wary of humans and they managed to evade capture.
Not everyone was cruel to them as they came to the attention of a kindhearted animal welfare volunteer who stepped in to help them.
She feared that these two would also be poisoned by the cruel villagers.
They would not go to her at first but she gradually managed to coax them and take them to a safe place for treatment.
Their skin conditions have cleared up and they are now getting stronger.
And it was at this point the volunteer contacted Animal Friends of Turkey for help in finding a secure future for the pair of them.
We could not say no as there was clearly no future for them while they remained over there.
They are in kennels now attached to a vets while we find a foster care home for the pair of them. They will be transferred to Fethiye once this has been done.
Now they are away from the streets and the cruel villagers they are beginning to learn how to trust humans again.
Their confidence is growing and we know this will only blossom further once they are in foster care. We have seen it so many times before.
Once he is in foster care we will be able to assess him properly to see how he develops.
We will also be able to test him for dog friendliness and child friendliness.
He is a gorgeous boy who is already beginning to respond to a kind word and a soft hand.
He will develop into a little treasure but we are certain that he will need a loving and patient owner to help him become everything he can be.
