Hope of a new life after rescue from a life sentence in the shelter

Regular visitors to the blissful Turkish resort of Çaliş Beach will know all about gentle giant Krem.

For five years this timid boy became something of a fixture along the main Çaliş seafront and a popular local celebrity much loved by the thousands of tourists who flock there.

Not all dogs learn to cope with life on the streets but Krem managed to eek out a happy existence even surviving the quieter winter months.

He was a regular along the front in the evenings as tourists flocked to the restaurants to catch the stunning sight of the setting sun across the bay.

If you had a juicy steak on your plate there was a fair chance that you would see Krem at your side gazing up at you with melting eyes.

He managed to survive well thanks to the kind help of the Çaliş Beach front restaurants and the generosity of strangers.

However, life for the lovely Krem changed drastically over the past 12 months.

Through most of those years Krem had two trusty, loyal and playful companions on the street – Tiger and Daisy – who shared every living minute with him.

A few months back Tiger fortunately managed to find someone who chose to take him back to the UK for a new life there.

And then Daisy sadly passed away after being poisoned by one of a sadly prevalent bunch of people over there who will stoop to any level to rid the area of its dogs.

Krem as many will remember him on Çaliş Beach seafront

Krem was left alone and then one of these same people decided to find a way of ridding Çaliş of Krem as well.

The authorities received a report that Krem had bitten someone. We do not believe there to be a shred of truth in the reports as you could not wish to meet a more gentle and sociable dog.

The result of the report was that Krem was picked up and immediately transported to the shelter.

One of the features of Çaliş is the small band of animal volunteers who carry out daily patrols to check on the street dogs and cats in the area.

Krem is child friendly and great with other dogs

These volunteers soon spotted Krem’s absence and went in search of him.

They found him in the shelter where he had been for a few days and what they saw made them weep.

He had gone downhill rapidly and was clearly suffering from deep depression.

There was no way that he could go back to his life on the streets as any further report would have resulted in him being put to sleep.

It seemed that his only option was to face a life in the shelter. His future looked so bleak.

It was then that the volunteers approached Animal Friends of Turkey and asked us if we could help find a happy future for this gorgeous and gentle boy.

How could we refuse, and so we immediately moved to take Krem out of the shelter and we first of all placed him with a foster carer in Çaliş.

Krem is thrived in foster care there and he lovesd to get out and about. His foster carer regularly took him out for walks of 3km or more and he loves it.

He is now about to leave there and will move to a new foster carer this time in the UK. This will be really useful for him as life in a UK home is very different to life they experience over in Turkey.

We are hoping after a period of settling we will then be able to find him a permanent forever home in the UK.

He will someone who can give him good exercise and lots of TLC.

He loves his cuddles and belly rubs and gets on very well with other dogs, especially larger ones.

He is fine with cats as long as they do not get too close and he his child friendly.

He is a little timid which is not unusual for a dog used to life on the streets where not every human he meets offers a hand of kindness.

This said he wants to trust, wants to love and wants to be loved as is the case with most dogs.

He can be wary of loud traffic noise and is a little bit of a giant scaredy cat so he will need someone who can be patient enough to help him rebuild his confidence.
