Brave volunteers step in to ensure Neve’s story gets a happy ending
This is the story of the kind hearts and persistence of animal welfare volunteers who were determined to ensure that this abandoned dog would be kept safe from harm.
The volunteers lived in a more remote area of Turkey called Gökova where they first came across Neve who was new to the streets around there.
We do not know Neve’s story but they suspect that she had been dumped there to a life she was totally unused to and unsure of.
She struggled with the other more street-wise dogs but more particularly she struggled with a number of the locals who wanted her gone.
They threatened to capture her and dump her in a nearby shelter that was well known in the area for harbouring disease and infection.
And they also threatened to call in the local town authorities from Zabita whose well known tactic in dealing with street dogs has been to drive them out to remote woodland and dump them there.
In either case, it was quite clear that Neve – as she has been called since her rescue – would not have survived either fate.
To ensure that Neve was spared, the volunteers managed to get hold of Neve and whisked her away to a place of safety.
They kept her hidden and cared for her while they worked up a plan for her permanent rescue.
This is when they contacted a nearby rescue charity who really wanted to help but they were struggling to deal with the number of dogs they already had on their hands.
The rescue charity then came to Animal Friends of Turkey to ask whether we would be prepared to step in to help as Neve’s case sounded urgent.
Having heard Neve’s story and the brave work of the volunteers we could not turn our backs on this young girl.
With the help of the volunteers, we arranged to get her away from Gökova and over to Seydikemmer into the arms of an AFOT foster carer.
We are now working with the foster carer to ensure that Neve receives the vaccinations and treatment she needs to prepare her for a move to the UK.
We estimate that Neve is between two to three years old and is pretty much a full Labrador. She has all the cuddly, warm and affectionate characteristics of that breed.
She is great with other dogs and also with cats. She has met young children and she has been fine with them as well, as you might expect from a Labrador.
Neve is still showing some of the signs of the trauma and distress she experienced while she was on the streets.
However, she is growing in confidence daily and we are sure she will blossom if shown the right level of care and patience she needs in a new forever home.
