Success Stories

Akita sure did give us the run around before she finally decided to work her way into the heart of the one she wanted to be her forever Mum. Now settled in Southampton with her failed foster family, Angela & Paul Stiles, Akita took some time in settling down to life in the UK.
When Akita initially arrived with another AFOT rescue, Cindy, she decided to escape in the middle of the night by digging under the fence from her adopters home, going on the run into the moorlands behind her home. A mass rescue operation ensued and although Cindy came back home within a day, Akita was definitely more stubborn. We eventually flew her Turkish foster mum, Brenda Gibson, over to give her the reassurance she needed and the two week standoff was brought to a happy ending.

It was felt that Akita needed some intensive rehabilitation after such a traumatic event so rather than stay with her initial adopter, she was taken by one of our UK foster carers to work on her fears and anxiety. The good news is that with care and ongoing help from her foster family she overcame her insecurities and decided she liked them so much she stayed. Angela & Paul joined the long list of failed foster carers when they adopted Akita in April 2024.

Cheeky Akita chose her very own forever home
“How cute are am I?”
Akita has settled well in her foster home it soon became her forever home.

Here’s Akita’s original story: Found on a local rubbish dump as young pups along with her Mum, Dad and siblings, local volunteers knew the pups stood no chance unless they were rescued. Sadly, three had Parvovirus but were luckily helped by a vet that had years of experience with the disease and thankfully all were saved. AFOT was asked to help and at nearly 5 months old they came into our care.

Akita when she came into our care

Akita will make an ideal companion and be so very loyal. She can be a little shy to begin with but once she gets to know you, she’ll be the most loving of dogs.

Pretty little Akita

Akita would be quite happy to live with another well adjusted dog who may help to bring her out of this shyness, but would equally do well on her own. She’s also great around cats.

Akita is one year old in May 2023 and is a small terrier-cross at 12kg.

Akita walks well in the lead and eats ever so politely. She’s a little lady who will make the most wonderful, loving pet. She just loves cuddles – receiving and giving them and is never happier than when she can be with you.

Akita may have found her forever home but we have many dogs still looking, so if you’re looking too, find out what’s involved in taking on one of our rescue dogs by clicking this link: Adopting With AFOT. A home check is always made and while there is no adoption fee required, we do ask for a voluntary donation to help towards our costs, which will be reduced as Akita is already in the UK.

All our dogs will be tested prior to leaving Turkey for the following diseases:

BRUCELLA

LEISHMANIAS

ANAPLASMA

HEARTWORM

E-CANIS

Proof of tests and accompanying signed vet letters will be sent to adopter.

AFOT is a UK registered charity (number 1182513), run by a small group of dedicated volunteers. We provide a lifetime rescue back up (RBU) and work to DEFRA guidelines. We were set up to offer a future where there is none to dogs in Turkey. With each dog costing us on average £2000 and our adoption donation being a small proportion of this, we rely solely on fundraising to help these abused, neglected and abandoned animals.

Without us there is no hope for these dogs and for every one we rehome there is another 100 waiting to take its place. But, we can only do so much without space or funds. Being volunteer run you can be sure 100% of your money goes towards food, foster care, vet bills and travel costs. Even if you decide not to adopt, please consider a donation.

Thank you. AFOT gofundmepage
