Axel has gone from scavenging in 40-degree heat in a Turkish dump to exploring the cooler, lush green environment of Cumbria with his loving forever family. Here’s his original story…
Axel is one of two pups spotted in an abandoned landfill site in Turkey by a kind couple as they were passing in a taxi. In the 40 degree heat there was no water or shade and they were living in filth. One of the pups was scavenging on a face mask.

The pups appeared to be alone and the couple had just decided to put them in the taxi when they spotted the Mum. They obviously couldn’t take the pups and leave the Mum so went to buy food and water bowls and then made a shady spot amongst the filth of the landfill. All three were all in a sorry state, full of ticks, fleas and malnourished. The couple then returned twice a day, everyday to feed them and also gave them a dewormer during this time. They frantically sought long term help and through a local volunteer they found a vets who kept them safe while they returned to UK and contacted AFOT.

All three were taken to a specialist kennels and then to our sanctuary where they all made excellent recoveries and are now ready to be adopted.

Axel, the little boy, is so like his Mum, Josie, in personality and appearance, just larger. He’s a black retriever-mix, now 13 months old (May 2023) weighing 30kg.

Good with strangers, he has lots of love to give and so enjoys giving it. He is great with other dogs and loves to play. He is strong and can pull on the lead so will need a firm but kind and consistent hand, but because he’s so intelligent he will pick up quickly on ongoing training. He is getting better around the sanctuary cats but proper introduction would need to be followed if this was to be considered.
